The Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), a body dedicated to the promotion of trade and investment in the Commonwealth, has announced the appointment of Mr Richard Burge as its new Chief Executive.
Burge, who is due to take up his post at CWEIC in the spring of 2017, currently heads up Wilton Park, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s agency for dialogue on international policy. In addition, he acts as a Commissioner for the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission, and is a member of the board of the FCO Diplomatic Academy.
This experience – combined with previous responsibilities as Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance, Director General of the Zoological Society of London and nearly 10 years in various roles at the British Council – means that Burge is well-equipped to play a critical role in the Commonwealth’s future prosperity.
Lord Marland, CWEIC Chairman, comments “With the inaugural Commonwealth Trade Ministers’ Meeting convening in March 2017, and the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) returning the following year, CWEIC has a pivotal global role to play. We are confident that with someone of Richard’s calibre at the helm, we can continue to strengthen trade and investment links between member countries for the benefit of all.”
Burge adds “I am delighted to join as CEO of the Council, particularly at such an interesting and pivotal moment. I hope that the years ahead will continue to bring positive developments for trade, investment and enhanced relationships across Commonwealth members. Certainly, I intend to ensure that CWEIC is at the forefront of the Commonwealth’s advance.”
