Trader’s Corner – Mauro Cozzi

We speak with Mauro Cozzi, CEO and Co-Founder of Emitwise

What attracted you to this industry?

Climate change is the single biggest existential threat humanity is facing. Not addressing it is equivalent to signing up for human extinction. I frankly just want people to be able to live their fair fulfilled lives, and prevent more and more people from becoming climate refugees.

In my opinion, the technology sector is capable of driving most change due to exponential advancements in AI, for example. This is why the intersection of the climate and tech sectors is most interesting to me, and this drew me towards pursuing a career in this industry.

What part of your job do you find most rewarding?

The part of my job I find the most rewarding is working with our customers – Chief Sustainability and Supply Chain Officers, and Sustainability and Procurement Managers, who are actually picking up the challenging task of driving the reduction in carbon emissions. When it comes to the climate agenda, there can be a lot of conflicts in business interests, and their job is to align all interests in a way that is beneficial for all stakeholders. Helping them achieve that, and learning from them on a daily basis is extremely rewarding for me.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I would say our proudest achievement would be the launch of Procurewise, our supply chain product, which is a truly disruptive innovation in the market. Nobody is able to offer this level of automated supply chain management, and transparency and accuracy in carbon footprint measurements. This was only achievable due to four years of intense combined efforts between sustainability, engineering and machine learning experts. We are very proud to have launched this in collaboration with CBRE.

What is a new skill that you would like to learn?

I’d like to spend a lot more time working in the weeds of latest AI tech. I’m an engineer by training and started my career writing code, so I’d like to understand the technical nuances of the latest technology to implement them at Emitwise at scale, and I’m spending my weekends doing exactly that!

If you could live and work remotely anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

It would have to be in London with the rest of the Emitwise team. I am a big fan of in-person work and working closely with teams and customers. I think London is one of the best places in the world. It has the highest density of sustainability experts per capita, and it is just a beautiful, incredible city.

What is your favourite way to spend an evening after a long and busy day at work?

I like to climb whenever I can – I go outdoor climbing on the weekends in locations like Wales, Scotland, and the south coast of the UK.

In the evenings, I tend to just go to my local climbing gym and get some exercise in – it just feels like a different kind of problem-solving, away from my computer screen.
