Revolutionising Cold Chain Efficiency

Thermo King has been a leader in transport temperature control solutions for decades. What are the most significant advancements you’ve made recently? 

For decades, Thermo King has consistently pioneered innovations in transport refrigeration, focused on reducing carbon emissions and minimising food and pharmaceutical waste in the cold chain. 

As commercial transport rapidly shifts towards alternative, low emission solutions. Thermo King is at the forefront with its all-electric refrigeration units, energy recovery technology, renewable power solutions and digital monitoring solutions for transport across road, ocean, and air – ensuring quality goods are delivered, always at the precise optimal temperature. 

Two notable advancements are the Thermo King AxlePower energy recovery system and the E-COOLPAC systems. 

AxlePower represents the next generation of trailer refrigeration – a fully electric, self-charging solution powered by the road that turns previously wasted energy into a valuable energy source. The super-innovative technology recovers the kinetic energy from the trailer’s movement and stores it in a high-voltage battery to power the transport refrigeration unit. Imagine a hybrid vehicle that never needs charging. That is the potential of AxlePower. A zero-emissions solution. 

The E-COOLPAC is a battery power technology allowing customers to electrify refrigerated trucks and trailers and use as a battery genset for refrigerated marine containers. The E-COOLPAC offers flexible battery configurations from 35kWh to 105kWh. E-COOLPAC batteries can be fitted or retrofitted to hybrid, LNG, electric or diesel-powered trucks, trailers and marine container chassis, where a genset can currently fit, and are compatible with Thermo King marine refrigeration units including CFF and Magnum Plus, as well as other brands of ISO1496-2 reefer units. 

The AxlePower energy recovery system is gaining traction. Can you explain how this technology benefits fleet efficiency and sustainability? 

The AxlePower system is a major step forward in energy recovery for transport refrigeration, and its successful deployment across Europe, Middle East and Africa showcases its versatility. Operating in climates ranging from the cold north of Europe to the heat of South Africa, AxlePower equipped trailers covered over 1 million km, generating 50,000 kWh while on the road – equivalent of five medium size hydroelectric power stations. All without needing shore power, in configurations from hybrid to full electric and from daily distribution of fresh products to long-haul trips. 

On average, AxlePower can reduce CO2 emissions by 7.5 tons per year compared to a diesel transport refrigeration unit (TRU) – even up to 12 tons annually for trailers operating appx. 3,000 hours in distribution.
