The donation contributed directly to the charity’s new distribution facility in Northam which is set to be the largest community pantry in Southampton. The Big Difference was formed in 2020 and supports over 100 local charities, community groups and schools in Southampton by helping struggling families and those facing food insecurity. Since its foundation, the charity has grown to become one of the biggest outreach projects in Southampton.
Over the coming months, DP World Southampton will provide staff the opportunity to volunteer their time at the charity to help sort food donations, make parcels and deliver them to the local community groups in need.
Dr Sanjan Mall, Chief Executive Officer at The Big Difference, said: “Thank you so much to the team at DP World for the very kind donation to help us with setup costs and infrastructure at our new site at the Northam Community Centre. We are thrilled with the new site which is in the middle of Northam estate serving thousands of families struggling with food costs.
“The feedback from the local community has been overwhelmingly positive and the friendships and sense of community we are building has put a smile on everyone’s face. It is a real pleasure that we can use kind volunteers from DP World who will give up their time to help us make a variety of parcels and food packs which will be sent to one of many communities we are working with.”
Ernst Schulze, Chief Executive Officer for Ports & Terminals at DP World in the UK, said: “Supporting the communities in which we operate in is fundamental to the values of our business. By donating to charities like The Big Difference, which directly addresses the needs of the community, we are playing an active role in helping to tackle localised food poverty. I encourage all those able to help out at The Big Difference to give their time to see how projects like these can help save lives and make a genuine impact.”
In addition to its hubs at Southampton and London Gateway, DP World’s offer includes logistics, forwarding and European transport capabilities, all of which are being integrated into the company’s global network. Operating in 78 countries, DP World handles 10 per cent of world trade.
